Liz's Class Notes
The kids enjoyed their first week at The Watermill Center with Philippe Cheng. Philippe engaged them in a discussion about self and identity, focusing on passports. They explored the information found in a passport and the format of portraiture. In the coming weeks, the kids will create their own passports to further investigate self and identity. They will also take self-portraits and have the opportunity to create in the beautiful surroundings of the Watermill Center.
We are in the final stages of completing our digital portfolios showcasing our apprenticeships. Much thought goes into how the kids communicate and present their work and learning. Once they are finished, I will share them with you all.
The kids enjoy reading with their buddies from Sakiko and Javis' class each Wednesday morning. It is heartwarming to see the kids mentoring their younger peers, and I think they enjoy reflecting on their early experiences with picture books and early readers.
The kids meet every Tuesday to discuss their books in their book groups. Setting aside this time for young adults to dis- cuss their reading enhances their critical thinking and communication skills, builds their comprehension skills, and promotes a love of reading and life-long learning. When the kids complete their books, they'll write reviews, which I will share with you.
